Employee Benefits Changes on the Horizon

It is almost open enrollment season for large employers and I have one tip for those of you who are fortunate enough to have a choice of benefits. Pay special attention. Don't assume that whatever choice you made last year is a good choice this year. There are major trends on the horizon. More companies are offering financial incentives to employees who participate in wellness programs. Some employers may penalize workers who smoke or have other unhealthy lifestyle habits by charging higher health premiums. Many employers are offering preventive screenings such as blood pressure, cholesterol and flu shots. An increasing number of companies are providing health coaches for their employees. Health coaches can give employees advice on managing their weight, blood pressure and diabetes for example. And, if you are lucky enough to have health insurance, count your blessings. A record 47 million people in this country do not have health insurance.
