Wellness Programs-Privacy Concerns

Intrinsic to a wellness program is the health risk assessment, a questionnaire that employees fill out that helps identify the risk factors an employee has for developing costly medical conditions. Many employees are wary of these important surveys, especially when they are administered by insurance companies! HIPAA rules forbid the employer to have access to private medical data and wellness companies and insurance companies should take pains to communicate how the individual participants data will be protected. If privacy concerns are addressed with effective communication, employees will be much more likely to comply with requests to complete the health assessments.

Communication and incentives are the most important drivers of wellness program success. Wellness programs are critical to reducing our health care cost burden in this country which is currently approaching $1 trillion a year in medical expenses and lost productivity according to s study released by the Milken Institute.
