Wellness Programs should be Mandatory

Most corporate wellness programs address chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. These chronic illnesses contribute $100 -$150 billion in health care spending in the United States. Corporate wellness programs often focus on encouraging employees to adopt healthy lifestyle habits - quit smoking, lose weight and exercise. Seventy five percent of our health care expenditures are associated with preventable chronic conditions, mostly due to obesity. The only way to control costs is to get people to adopt healthier habits. We spend more on health care than any country in Europe, according to a report that appeared in the October 2 edition of Health Affairs. Wellness programs are one way to provide more individuals with the tools they need to succeed in managing their health and reducing their risk factors for disease.
