Harvard Experts Weigh in On Health Insurance Cost Increases

The Kaiser Daily Health Policy Report summarizes a recent Newsweek article detailing recommendations from seven Harvard Experts on how to fix problems with the US Healthcare System. I am not arguing with their recommendations, I just can't help but think that so many of these issues would go away if Americans took steps to eliminate the unhealthy habits that contribute to 70% of all of the healthcare costs in this country.

The article talks about expanding health insurance access and the fact that businesses are balking at paying the skyrocketing costs - fact is, costs would not sky rocket if we reduced heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and other preventable diseases. The vast majority of prescriptions written in this country are for so called lifestyle diseases - heart disease, diabetes etc.. Again, we would not have this problem if we were healthier. Businesses like Avery Dennison who have robust corporate wellness programs are at the front of a growing trend towards prevention.
