Small Employees Should Tap Into Wellness Programs for Healthcare Cost Containment

According to a survey published December 12 by NAPEO ( the National Association of Professional Employer Organizations), health insurance is ranked as among the most important benefits that offered by small employers in the battle to recruit and retain good workers. This even though health insurance rates rose by 10% on average, and small businesses struggle with the increased cost burden.

Small businesses have not turned to wellness programs as a strategy to contain or curb healthcare cost increases, and this represents an opportunity for them. Small businesses have the ability to develop programs with higher participation than large employers due to day in day out contact of upper level managers and owners. Strong support from the President, CEO and other top level managers is one key to a successful wellness program. Wellness Councils of America ( WELCOA) has some excellent white papers on implementing successful programs.
