High obesity and smoking rates in Louisiana and nearby states were responsible for the poor showing of many Southern states, which were clustered near the bottom of the rankings. Over 30 percent of Louisianians are obese. Twenty percent have no health insurance.
The obesity rate in Vermont is 22 percent. The state also has had the third-highest public health spending in the country.
