How Healthy is Your State?

Vermont, home of apple pie and maple syrup, has held on to its place as the country’s healthiest state, according to a recent report by the American Public Health Association and the Partnership for Prevention advocacy group.
Louisiana, home of gumbo and the beignet, beat out Mississippi to claim the spot as least healthy state.
What makes the cold-weather state so much healthier than its warmer sister?

High obesity and smoking rates
in Louisiana and nearby states were responsible for the poor showing of many Southern states, which were clustered near the bottom of the rankings. Over 30 percent of Louisianians are obese. Twenty percent have no health insurance.

The obesity rate in Vermont is 22 percent. The state also has had the third-highest public health spending in the country.
If it weren't clear already, take this as further proof of how much work we in wellness--especially in certain parts of the country-- have cut out for us.
