Workplace Wellness Tip: Creating a Healthy Culture

There's something magical about doughnuts. Bring a dozen with you in the morning to share with coworkers, and you're office royalty. The problem is, a culture of unhealthiness can develop over time. Doughnuts for breakfast can lead to a gut-busting hamburger for lunch, with soft drinks and potato chips in between.

Today's simple word of advice is to start a new corporate culture, based on healthier choices. Here are a few concrete steps you can take:
  • Rethink snacks. If you normally bring sweets and pastries to meetings, consider whole wheat crackers, hummus, and veggies instead. Provide bottled water instead of soft drinks.
  • Schedule a healthy pot luck. One Friday a month, encourage everyone to bring in a simple healthy dish and share the recipe with their colleagues. AllRecipes can help if you're cooking-challenged.
  • Encourage group activities. Why not organize a walking group that meets during the lunch hour twice a week? Or a group that uses break time for stretching? Twittercize has some great ideas.
If you get creative and make wellness fun, your employees will participate and everyone will benefit. So what ideas do you have? I'd love to hear from you.
