Companies Weigh the Benefits of Wellness Programs

Although a few economic indicators are looking up, many companies still feel the pressure to cut costs. And while employers generally understand the connection between a healthy workforce and a healthy bottom line (see our recent blog on Safeway's wellness program), some executives have targeted their wellness programs for budget reductions. I hope your organization can avoid such a costly mistake.

While it does take time for wellness programs to generate a return on investment, they are proven to work. According to an article in USA Today, IBM found that its wellness initiatives had saved the company about $80 million in health claims.

If executives at your company question the need for employee wellness initiatives, be ready to defend them! Cite the successes of other companies, and remind them that a healthy workforce is happier and more productive. Your employees will thank you!
