The Need for Wellness: Healthy Lifestyles in Decline

A recent study out of the Medical University of South Carolina, published in the American Journal of Medicine, underscores the urgent need for health and wellness initiatives. In five categories--weight, diet, alcohol consumption, exercise, and tobacco use--Americans are significantly less healthy than they were 20 years ago.

In 1988, 15% of Americans scored well in all five categories. Today, only 8% do. One of the most troubling statistics involves those with chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart diease. Although they stand to benefit the most from adopting a healthy lifestyle, individuals with these conditions are no more likely to do so than their healthier counterparts.

The lesson for wellness professionals is that there's no time to waste! As even President Obama has acknowledged, wellness programs motivate people to make positive, lasting lifestyle changes. So what can you do to make the next 20 years healthier for your employees?
