Op-Ed: Moving from "Sick Care" to Wellness

In a recent op-ed, Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa made the case for an overhaul of our nation's health care system. But while extending coverage to every American is a central goal, he also expressed the need for real disease prevention. Corporate wellness programs are an integral part of that effort.

It's hard to argue with the statistics. 95% of every health care dollar is spent on treating illnesses after they occur, Harkin says, with little dedicated to prevention. 75% of health care costs can be attributed to five chronic conditions that are largely preventable: heart disease, diabetes, obesity, prostate cancer, and breast cancer.

Senator Harkin has long been a strong supporter of workplace wellness programs, and we truly appreciate his efforts. Given the impact that prevention and wellness efforts can make on people's lives, we can't wait to see the trend spread nationwide.
